Lirion Power acquires 77 MW onshore wind portfolio from GIP, a part of BlackRock

Lirion Power, an Irish renewable power operator and developer, today announced the acquisition of a 77 MW onshore wind portfolio from Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), a part of BlackRock.

The portfolio comprises five operating wind farms — Acres, Barranafaddock, Knockaneden, Ballagh and Raragh 2 — across Donegal, Waterford, Kerry, Limerick and Meath. The transaction is expected to close shortly.

The acquisition strengthens Lirion Power’s position as an active Irish owner-operator and takes its renewable energy platform to 200 MW, with further growth planned in the coming months. Lirion Power is backed by HitecVision and Reinova Partners.

Strengthening Ireland’s energy security and lowering costs

Lirion Power focuses on improving existing assets and optimising the use of established infrastructure to deliver lower-cost renewable generation capacity in Ireland. The acquired GE and Enercon turbines, in the 2.3–2.85 MW range, are well suited to the company’s strategy of life extension, hybridisation and repowering.

This approach will support:

  • Reduced electricity prices for Irish consumers by extending the productive life and operational output of proven sites.

  • Enhanced security of supply by keeping high-performing generation sites in operation and pairing them with battery storage and solar.

  • Continued progress towards Ireland’s climate targets by maximising output from sites with grid connections, planning history and established community relationships.

“Maximising and expanding the contribution from existing assets is the lowest cost of power generation capacity. Our strategy is to ensure these assets can continue to generate clean, low-cost electricity long into the future, while maximising the use of existing grid connections by adding complementary technologies such as solar and battery storage,” said Donal O’Sullivan, Chief Executive Officer of Lirion Power.

New corporate PPA opportunities

The enlarged portfolio creates new opportunities for Irish businesses seeking long-term, competitively priced renewable power through corporate Power Purchase Agreements. As hybridisation and repowering work progresses, Lirion Power expects to bring additional contracted capacity to the corporate PPA market, supporting sustainability targets and long-term fixed power prices.

An active, local owner

Lirion Power is committed to being an active, hands-on owner of the assets it acquires and to engaging with the communities around every project in its portfolio.

“The communities that have hosted these sites for years are the same communities we’ll be working alongside as we continue to operate the existing assets and invest in their next phase,” O’Sullivan added.
